Marc Brotherton

Marc Brotherton Biography

Marc Brotherton’s studio practice includes both painting and drawing in a visual attempt to be responsive to his immediate surroundings during a time of rapid global change.  Brotherton likes to explore many ideas, some of which are: process, new technology, communication, spontaneity, humor, politics, and design. Christopher Hart Chambers, writing for dArt International says, ”Brotherton’s works are what one might playfully term, ‘Neo-Geo meets Punk Povera:’ Peter Halley plus Antoni Tàpies in hot pink and black on white.”

Brotherton exhibits his work in solo exhibitions, art fairs, art centers, and museums, nationally and locally on a regular basis. He is represented by Causey Contemporary Fine Art in New York City. Brotherton received his MFA from Brooklyn College.

Marc Brotherton Statement

My work is an attempt to be responsive to my immediate surroundings during a time of rapid change. Living in the Twenty-first century, we are constantly bombarded by input. Whether it be from our televisions, news sources, the internet, and by many other communication devices. I make art from an inner curiosity, a personal necessity to acknowledge an awareness that we are here together inhabiting an increasingly chaotic world.

I have been working toward achieving more open and spontaneous qualities in my work. Recently, I began a process that emphasizes an experimental approach to my painting practice. In which I mix a variety of paint applications as well as different types of actual paint mediums together on single and multiple canvases. My intention to be free, to be able to express myself, to have a sense of humor, and contribute to a dialogue about living life during a particular time, that is our own.
