Zane York

Zane York Biography

Zane York was born in Fremont, Nebraska and was raised all over the Midwest. From an artistic family,he began drawing at an early age; his focus and passion quickly became evident. He spent hours drawing and learning anatomy in pursuit of illustrating comic books – a goal wisely abandoned. Now Zane’s paintings resemble those of the Renaissance masters in style and technique. He works in traditional oils on linen, canvas or panel in a photorealistic manner. His recent compositions directly reference such Dutch still-life painters as  Pieter Claesz or Jan Davidsz. de Heem as can be seen in the works for his upcoming solo exhibition at DuBuque  Museum of Art slated for 2017. Meanwhile, his use of light and shadows descends from the Rembrandt school of painting. Zane’s own sense of humor is subtly evident as the flowers within each of the paintings are actually clusters of insects. Zane’s currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. His paintings have now been exhibited throughout the United States and appear in such collections as that of the Hormel Foundation.

Zane York Statement

My paintings look like things; now mostly cats and bees, animals and entomology. They are not necessarily pretty things, not necessarily ugly things, but intensely visual things. Be it still life, landscape, figuration, or other, my paintings project a uniquely visual experience that is specific in subject, yet richly indirect in content. I work under the notion that substance cannot be faked; it is only with focus, understanding, and vision that a painting can transcend its façade. Preconception should be abandoned or the visual dialog risks conceit, superficiality, and stale symbology. Rather than push the viewer to a specific conclusion or punch line, my paintings aim to intrigue and point in the general vicinity of the profound.
